The reasons for the banks missing analyst forecasts could be summed up in one word: competition. Remember when politicians would constantly accuse the Big Four of being an oligopoly of collusion? With the RBA cash rate at zero, the banks were forced to offer historically cheap fixed rates on mortgages in a surging housing market. Deposit rates on offer were almost zero, so there was nowhere further to go.
